Po'ailani | Dual Diagnosis Treatment

The program which started in 1976 began its work as a community-based residential dual diagnosis treatment program licensed as a Special Treatment Facility (STF) by the Hawaii State Department of Health. The target population of Po'ailani is adults with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse issues. The program obtained its non-profit 501 (c) (3) status in 1984 and operated in various locations on Oahu for over twenty years as a (5) bed facility providing residential treatment services to our target population.

In 1998, due to the growing need of the community, the program expanded its residential services to include (8) beds and opened its first outpatient treatment clinic in Kailua, Oahu. One year later the residential capacity doubled to (16) beds and the Agency also opened its first supervised clean and sober homes. The homes provided consumers with a stable environment to live after their completion of the residential treatment program or while attending outpatient treatment. This began the concept of a continuum of care.

In 2000 the program purchased the two homes in Kailua, Oahu which housed the residential treatment program. In 2005 Po'ailani expanded its desperately needed services to the Big Island of Hawaii. The program also purchased a 2.5 acre parcel in Kaneohe to serve as the new location of our 24 Hour supervised housing program and the site of the office of the Executive Director.

Today in 2006, Po'ailani, Inc. celebrates 30 years of service in Hawaii, with treatment locations in Kailua, Oahu and Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The program offers Residential Dual Diagnosis treatment (Oahu), three levels of outpatient treatment services and Aftercare (Oahu & Kona), 24 Hour and 8-16 Hour supervised housing (Oahu & Kona) and independent housing (Oahu). The program has grown to serve 130 clients on any given day and boasts a dedicated staff of over 100.
